Miscellaneous Information
Allan was born on 9 June 1920 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. His father, a farmer, was born in Peterborough ,Ontario and his mother in Fennel’s, Ontario. He had two brothers Walter Keith and Ross Leroy. Ross served in the Army with the Canadian Special Service and was sadly killed on 27 September 1944, buried in Marseilles. Allan’s mother also died in 1944 and his father in 1947. They lived at RR No.2 Arthur, Ontario. Allan attended Public School, Monson, in Saskatchewan 1928-1936 and Goodwater, Saskatchewan 1936-1937. He also took courses from the Department of Education in Saskatchewan, on agriculture , 1934-1936. He enjoyed all sports and built model aeroplanes as a hobby. He worked on the farm with his father between 1937-1942. |
Enlisting on 1 April 1942, and after early training, he embarked from New York on 8 October 1943 for the U.K. Allan arrived at 3 PRC 17 October 1943, 3 (0) AFU 11 January 1944, 82 OTU 29 February 1944, 61 Base 6 June 1944 and 428 Squadron on 8 July 1944. |

Operation | Dusseldorf. 992 aircraft, 19 losses- 4 of which crashed behind Allied lines (0.4%). Most of the bombing fell on the northern suburbs with more than 5000 houses being destroyed . 7 industrial premises were destroyed and 18 seriously damaged, including some important steel works. At least 678 people were killed. This was the last significant raid on Düsseldorf. |
